Arson Shatters Hailsham Town Football Club's Community Spirit

The Hailsham football community has been shaken by a purposeful act of arson, leaving the town’s cherished club to face the aftermath of destruction and sorrow. Hailsham Town Football Club, a vital part of local pride and sporting spirit, was set ablaze on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, resulting in an estimated £35,000 worth of damage to its recreation ground located on Western Road.

The fire, believed to have been deliberately set, began around 7 PM close to the club's main stand, with conifer hedges acting as the initial fuel source. The flames rapidly expanded, resulting in considerable structural and environmental destruction.

The East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service responded promptly, sending two fire engines from Eastbourne to the location. Fire crews utilized hose reel jets to gain control of the blaze, but the results were devastating—a beloved community center was left marred by pointless destruction.

"At 7:10 PM, we received reports of a fire affecting the hedges at the recreation ground on Western Road in Hailsham," said a representative of the fire service. "This incident is being classified as a suspected act of arson, and investigations by the police are currently in progress."

Local police are conducting an active investigation into the incident, asking the community for any information that may help identify the culprits. PC Luke Ceschin highlighted the risks associated with the event, expressing relief that no injuries occurred.

“We suspect there were several individuals present in the vicinity when the fire broke out,” stated PC Ceschin. “If anyone possesses any information or footage related to the incident—including dash cam videos from any vehicles that were passing through the area—please reach out to us online or call 101, referencing serial 1235 of 12/11.”
